Description: on stigma... the RRS is trying to borrow stigma from mental health problems and apply it to theists... mel seems to say that can't be good for the mentally unwell. Which is more important, treating mental illness or stigmatizing theists? I'm biased in this... I think stigma is a rotten petty concept for herd animals. |

What is hard for me is that the people who scrutinize most the mentally ill activists, alternative religions/aethists, alternative thinkers are the very people who are there to help them. Every passion, every new artistic or expressive project is looked at as a sign of an episode. Then come the medication adjustments, additions, and chastisements for letting your illness take control. __________________________________________________
pyrrho314 ::: Favorites 2007-11-26 14:55:56 that latter thing for activists is very common, and it sucks, and it's not a coincidence as these are people that have had to face the hard side of our society, the unjust side, and sometimes poor public service. And yet, as with Mel, these are some of the best people in terms I personally appreciate. __________________________________________________
realiamarebus ::: Favorites 2007-11-26 12:27:32 The only thing I would add is that once someone with a mental illness has there life under control, they face many hardships because of the stigma IF people find out. Having a mental illness will also prevent you from being electable in this country. People are very afraid of people with bipolar and schizophrenia, and if word gets out that that person "is one" then they are under a microscope. Also, imagine being a social activist, or an atheist who has a mental illness. Double duty. __________________________________________________
