This is one of my favorite church hymns. I can always count on singing it on Reformation Sunday!

I'm talking about music that is supposed to be worship music, but doesn't even name the Lord or His attributes, NOT the musical composition or style. I like a variety of music and styles, it is most of the lyrics that I do not like. The Lord God Almighty is not nicknamed, "Puff, the Magic Dragon."

I am not addressing any music that is specifically identified as "wordhip music," which retains the exaltation of the Lord God Almighty, and the specific names given to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I am hating music that does the opposite, and actually could be readily identified as some kind of a--maybe love song, or something that could actually be mistaken for secular music.

I agree, what God looks on is the heart. We have to express our praise to God that is true to us, whether it be Gregorian, Hymns, Jazz, Sankey's style, pop/rock. Unfortunately, we can sing any style and 'our hearts a far from Him'.

I wasn't referring to your comments. It was some of the others. I totally understand people not liking a particular style of music, but to suggest it is bad because they don't like it is sad. We play our music as though Jesus himself were our audience. I will check your web site.

You judge me wrongly. I really enjoy the quality of the older music, but I also play jazz piano and in fact have a web site of my jazz compositions with Christian lyrics (jazzworship(dot)com)

This is not to promote my own video, only to refute some of the bias spoken here. I love the traditional hymns. But, listen to the "contemporary" version of Fortress that the band did at my church. I believe that if Luther could hear it, he'd be tapping his toes and snapping his fingers. youtube . com/watch?v=BuSQ5XDHLJA

But your argument is that it is your feeling and desire to hear only the music YOU want to hear. Can you show in scripture where God hates "ALL OF THIS NEW MUSIC" like you say you do?

I am happy to be a member of an LCMS congregation that has one contemporary service where we love our guitars and I am blessed to be the (gasp) drummer! Do you think that by putting down modern music you will a) draw more people to the church, or b) drive people away because they feel guilty for liking modern music?

I, too, love the traditional hymns of the past. But I also love much of the new music. Had Luther had electric guitars and synthesizers, he would have incorporated them into his music. Matthew 11:17 "'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge and you did not mourn.'" Both are valid and neither is an "affront to God."
