In one of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey Maturin novels, we find two sea men on the deck of Surprise arguing over the mermaid they just saw. One of them insisted the mermaid was holding a brush; the other insisted the mermaid was holding a hand mirror. The two were close to striking each other, their individual convictions were so passionate. Neither stopped to consider if the mermaid was actually a mermaid: they were arguing the details, not the fundamentals. Fumdamentalists often interpret Genesis literally and want to indoctrinate the rest of the world with this. But since this non-literal interpretation does not attempt to indoctrinate non-Christians, it is not pose any danger to society.
