Description:
I did a Google News search for "Ron Paul" and an article entitled "Ron Paul for President Campaign Hires Top Internet Spammer" came up as the first link. If I didn't know better, I would have believed it. It took me a while before I figured out that it was a satirical article. Google News needs to do a much better job of marking FAKE articles as such. The opportunity for disinformation as a result of this is significant. TELL GOOGLE WHAT YOU THINK OF THIS http://www.google.com/support/news/bin/request.py?ctx=answer ==================================== I strongly oppose your policy of including satirical news. Your FAQ explains the policy in the following way: "Google News strives to provide you with access to as many news sources as possible, including those that satirize current events." This is a ludicrous explanation. Many of these satirical news sources do not simply "satirize current events", they INVENT events. They are not sources of news, they are sources of fabricated news stories for entertainment purposes. Moreover, your FAQ claims that satirical articles are marked clearly. This is NOT the case. I would not notice the "satire" label if it wasn't pointed out to me. Until Google News changes its policy of including satirical articles without marking them clearly, I will use Yahoo! News to access legitimate news articles. ==================================== |

rsmllc ::: Favorites Shows what a joke (literally) search engine optimization can be, when a satirical page can get the number one ranking. The web site must have spammed out the structure of their page to the max to achieve the No. 1 spot. THIS is the most relevant content from a search for 'Ron Paul?' NOT his campaign or congressional page, or archive of his speeches? So much for algorithms. 07-07-07 15:08:19 _____________________________________________________
bsullivan2 ::: Favorites actually, the Google News search ranks results by Most Recent, rather than Most Relevant. you're thinking of Google web search. the real joke (haha) is the fact that Google News includes satirical news AT ALL. and this isn't Jon Stewart-esque making-fun-of-real-news satire, it's The Onion-esque completely-fabricated-news-that-sounds-funny satire. 07-07-07 15:18:18 _____________________________________________________
lucky4729 ::: Favorites When I first saw that, I'm like WTF? Then I realized it was satire but how many won't? I guess all we can do is make sure the other candidates get their own juciy stories. 07-07-06 10:55:42 _____________________________________________________
Zodiaccaidoz ::: Favorites I contacted Google weeks ago about it. Obviously there hasn't been any change. WTF are they thinking? 07-07-06 09:49:01 _____________________________________________________
RonPaulMeetUpVideos ::: Favorites Well stories come and go. You could have just come across this at a bad time. Are you saying these videos have stayed in place for a long time? If not then this is just the next story in line sort of thing. I get email alerts for Ron Paul searches and they are pretty good as far as I can tell. 07-07-06 03:36:13 _____________________________________________________
bsullivan2 ::: Favorites I'm saying that Google includes satirical "news sources" that have the potential to mislead and misinform people looking for REAL news. I had no idea it was satire when I read the headline, and the article wasn't so obviously satirical either. The Ron Paul article is just an example. 07-07-06 03:43:17 _____________________________________________________
RonPaulMeetUpVideos ::: Favorites Whoops- I didn't read carefully - sorry my bad. 07-07-06 05:02:27 _____________________________________________________
